Four tightly knit teams join to make One Super Field Day

In the Ham Radio world the last weekend in June has special significance – it is Field Day Weekend. This year Seattle ACS invited its good friends: The Medicals Services Team (MST), The Puget Sound Repeater Group (PSRG) and the West Seattle ARC to co-sponsor the event. This made sense since many of the members of one team are members of the other. Seattle ACS first celebrated Field Day in 1999 at an abandoned school on top of Magnolia Hill initiating its tradition of urban field days. The event has grown and improved over the years. This year over 90 people signed in with 48 participants and 42 visitors. While the total number of contacts and points are still being calculated preliminary indications are that numbers have far surpassed previous years’ efforts.

Our Field Day event was made possible due to the sponsorship and support from our served agencies and partners: South Seattle Community College for providing us a great site for the past three events. Seattle Office of Emergency Management for their direct (thanks for the Porta-Potties) and in-kind support including signs, vests and supplies. And Seattle Police Homeland Security Section for providing field equipment including tents, generators and furniture.

We want to thank the planning team that worked for several months to organize the event and those who came early Friday to set up the tent and those who brought their equipment, constructed antennas and generally pitched in to make this a successful event. The truly great thing about our Field day events is that people do what needs to be done, the work gets done, the food is brought, the gas is supplied and no one goes hungry or thirsty.

Here is Lee Bonds’ (N7KC) summary of the event announced on the PSRG net June 28:
Field Day 2010 is now history.  Mighty preparations were brought to fruition last Friday when the advance set-up team took the field and along with the event started without a hitch on Saturday morning.  Immediately preceding the start gun was a plaque presentation to Linda Dockstader, K7LSK, honoring her late husband Bill who was a very good friend to Ham Radio.

Introductions were made and then it was gentlemen and women… start your engines.  The resultant joint effort among the Seattle ACS, the PSRG, the MST, and the West Seattle Radio Club resulted in one of the best Field Day exercises that I can remember.  Dave, WB0RAZ, erected a full half wavelength off center fed dipole that was more than impressive to the eye and Mark, N7LYE, installed a long wire from a local building to the site that was around 200 feet long.  Several other antennas rounded out the complement.  As was to be expected the lowly dipole proved to be a good work horse too.

Curt, WR5J, supplied copious amounts of macaroni and cheese and the combination of Dave, K7DST & Michelle, KE7HVG, showed up with pot of chili that seemed to evaporate.  Todd, WA7FOX, manned the coals and Dave, KD7ZYM,…whipped out burger and salmon patties like pros.  The CW team did a good job scoring contacts but were slightly outdone by the phone guys. The exam session produced several new hams and a few upgrades.  Lots of visitors enjoyed this weekend too.

So many Radio Amateurs made a contribution that I cannot list their calls.  Many thanks to everyone who contributed time and talent to make this exercise a great success.  Just a really nice weekend and the weather was just about perfect.

A great time was had by all – looking forward to Field Day 2011.
